Hearing the Word

“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
Romans 10:17 (NKJV)

Introduction & Purpose

Hearing the Word

Salvation begins with hearing God’s Word. No one in Scripture was saved without first hearing the message of Christ. Faith is not created by feelings, traditions, or personal experience — it is produced by the Word of God.

This page examines what Scripture teaches about hearing the gospel and why it is the necessary beginning of salvation.

What It Means to Hear

In the New Testament, hearing is not passive listening. It involves receiving God’s Word with understanding, honesty, and a willingness to respond.

“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
Matthew 11:15 (NKJV)

Hearing requires humility — a heart willing to let Scripture speak for itself.

Hearing in the Book of Acts

Every recorded conversion in Acts begins the same way: people heard the Word preached.

These responses are not religious traditions — they are the responses taught and commanded by Christ through His apostles.

“Then those who gladly received his word were baptized…”
Acts 2:41 (NKJV)

“Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart…”
Acts 2:37 (NKJV)

The gospel was preached. The people heard. Then they responded.

What Hearing Is Not

Hearing is not inherited faith
Hearing is not tradition
Hearing is not emotional experience

“And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard?”
Romans 10:14 (NKJV)
